Introduction
Comprehension from the Ground Up, written by Sharon Taberski, offers insight into balanced literacy instruction in Kindergarten through Third grade classrooms. Taberski introduces a new way of thinking in relation to the pillars of reading, which came from the National Reading Panel Report. This report stated that the five pillars are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. According to Taberski, all of these areas are important parts of the reading curriculum. She believes that comprehension isn't actually a pillar at all, but that comprehension encompasses all of the other pillars, and pictures it on top of all of the other pillars. The pillars would then be accurate fluent reading, background knowledge, oral language and vocabulary, reading-writing connection, and repertoire of strategies. Along with these pillars, a fondation of time to talk, time to write, and time to read needs to be established. Please navigate through our site to see how these pillars work together to help readers become successful, motivated, and engaged readers.
